Fix Your Looney Tunes Theology

November 1, 2026

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, held for judgment...

(2 Pet 2:4 NASB)

Like most kids growing up in the 80s and 90s, I watched cartoons. Saturday morning and after school, I had my favorite shows to watch. And most of those cartoons at least once had a joke about one of the characters dying (or just falling too far underground) and winding up in hell being tortured by the devil. At that point in my life, if you had asked me about hell or the devil, my answer would have sounded very much like one of these cartoon scenes.

At work a couple of years ago, I had a coworker tell me that he thought the devil deserved "more credit" for being the one who tortures evil people on God's behalf. And I realized that at some point during my personal Bible study I had learned a truth that the rest of the world is still in the dark about: hell is not the domain of the devil and his minions and it is not a place where they torture humans. Hell is a place of suffering and punishment for the devil and his demons, as well as for the humans who get sent there. There is no one there performing the torture, but the very nature of the place itself is torturous.

I tried to explain this to my coworker, but as he wasn't a believer, he had no interest in correcting his theology. However we are believers - with access to Bibles - and we should be more careful about where we get our ideas and beliefs from. Hollywood is under no obligation to display an accurate representation of our beliefs, and in fact they will often twist the story into whatever is most entertaining. And while ideas about the nature and government of hell are perhaps not of greatest importance, ideas about who goes there and why certainly are. Hollywood, along with most of society, still clings to the idea that so long as you're in the "upper half" of good people, or so long as you don't commit any of the "big" sins, or that so long as your good deeds outnumber your bad deeds, then you'll be just fine and don't have to worry about hell. But Jesus gives us these startling words: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6 NASB)

Taking your theology from any source other than the Bible is risky. You might just get some silly idea about playing harps in clouds, but you might end up missing out on the most important truths, affecting you or your loved ones for all of eternity. Praise God that He has given us the written Word! Let us not continue in ignorance, but daily teach ourselves from its pages. "...and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work." (2 Tim 3:15-17 NASB)
