Just Like His Father

October 9, 2026

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;

(Eph 5:1 NASB)

Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way."

(John 5:19 NASB)

In the movie Jaws, there's a scene where Roy Scheider is clearly upset and frustrated about the shark problem he's having. But as he's sitting at the dinner table, his mind a million miles away, he starts to notice that his little boy is mimicking him: as he sighs, his son sighs; as he crosses his arms, his son crosses his arms. In this picture we see the very human experience of children mimicking and becoming like their parents.

We often hear the phrase, "He's just like his dad!" And that is a phrase that's sometimes good, sometimes bad; sometimes it delights the child, and sometimes it angers the child. But no one ever says, "He's just like the person his dad told him to be," because kids don't become the people we tell them to be, they become the people we model before them. If we're angry, they'll be angry; if we worry, they worry. No matter how many times you tell your kid to not get into fights, or gossip, or bully, if they see you doing it, they'll do it, too.

This message is certainly applicable to all the parents reading this, but more importantly is that you have a Heavenly Father. And while it's one thing for a pastor on Sunday morning to say, "Do this," or "Don't do that," it's when you start spending time day after day "seeing" your Lord through the pages of His word that you instinctively become like Him. In the same way that your human nature caused you to mimic your earthly parents as you grew up around them, so will spending time with your Heavenly parent conform you into His image. It's just what kids do.

Don't forget: even Jesus lived this way! In our second verse, we read that Jesus only did what He saw the Father doing. Jesus patterned His life perfectly after the Father, and the more we pattern our lives after Jesus, the more we, too, will be like the Father. This is why it's so important for us to daily read stories of the life of Jesus, and of those who have followed in His footsteps, because everywhere else we look in life we see examples of what not to do, and who not to be. If the only people you see each day are those who model strife, jealousy, revenge, pride, anger, and all the other ways of the flesh, you will inevitably drift towards those. But when we see Him in His word, and meditate on His nature, we will, as beloved children, inevitably become imitators of our Heavenly Father.
